Blackduck Telephone Company purchased the Ash River Telephone Exchange in 1998. Ash River is located in Northeastern Minnesota along the Canadian border, about 40 miles east of International Falls. The exchange consists of about 850 square miles. The area is within the Voyageurs National Park, the Superior National Forest, and adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
A boat landing near Ash River, maintained by the National Park Service, provides access to Kabetogama, Namakan, and Rainy Lakes. Along the Ash River Trail (highway #121) are homes, resorts, marinas, resaurants, and houseboats.
Many of the Ash River telephone custmers are accessible only by water. One of the better known sites of the area is the Kettle Falls Hotel, where you can actually look south from the United States into Canada.
